Abstract

1358164 Filaments, fibres and films of carbon from lignin G B TOOLS & COMPONENTS EXPORTS Ltd 28 May 1971 [30 July 1970] 36888/70 Heading C1A A carbon fibre filament, or film is produced by extracting a ligniferous polymer from a lignin containing source, e.g. bagasse or straw, treating the polymer either by heating in an inert atmosphere at 140 to 240‹ C. or by irradiating, e.g. with beta or X rays, forming a fibre, filament or film from the thus treated polymer and then carbonizing this product under tension. The carbonization may be achieved at between 300‹ C. and 3000‹ C. preferably 800‹-2100‹ C. and most preferably 1500-1800‹ C. The first heat treatment may be carried out at temperatures in the range 180-210‹ C. The lignin polymer may also be derived from papermaking wastes,
