Abstract

1357945 Collapsible boats D TANABE 13 Sept 1971 [15 Feb 1971] 42566/71 Headings B7A and B7S A boat comprises a hull made by folding a single or double sheet of material and a stabilizer made by folding a further sheet of material. The stabilizer is permanently secured to the hull to provide open ended water passages between the stabilizer and the bottom of the hull. The boat is collapsed by folding. As illustrated, the hull is formed from two superimposed rectangular sheets of plastics material which are folded in the manner shown in Fig. 2 to provide a square ended hull which is held erect by the insertion of reinforcing members 41. The sheets are laterally staggered so that at each side of the boat the edge of one sheet can be folded over and secured to the edge of the other. Each sheet of material has two plane layers and an intermediate corrugated layer, the corrugations running along the boat. The stabilizer is folded from a single sheet of material with its corrugations running across the boat as shown in Fig. 3. The stabilizer is secured to the sides of the hull by riveting and welding and to the bottom of the hull by adhesive. Rubber rowlocks 42 are added. The boat is collapsed by removing the reinforcing members 41 and then pulling the ends of the hull outwards so that the sides fold on to the bottom. The boat is then folded about its longitudinal centre line. In another embodiment, Figs. 8-12 (not shown), the hull has a rounded bow and a square stern, and the passage forming parts of the stabilizer extend both downwardly and outwardly from the hull to give increased stability.
