Abstract
1356566 Carbon fibres and films COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 13 Aug 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 42991/70 Heading C1A Shaped carbon articles selected from fibres, filaments and films, are made by spinning or extruding a composition comprising a non- polymeric hydrocarbon consisting of mixtures of highly aromatic organic non-polymeric compounds which contain as an additive, 0À05 to 20% by weight of one or more compounds selected from amines, amides, alcohols and carboxylic acids which contain no aromatic groups and contain chains of at least eight carbon atoms, to form the desired article, then oxidizing and carbonizing the article. The additive may be octanoic, myristic, stearic, palmitic, or behenic acids, decyl, stearyl, or cetyl alcohols and corresponding amides and amines. The non-polymeric material may be a solution or extract of coal, pitch or tar obtained from coal or petroleum pitch, bitumen or asphalt. In examples anthracene oil extracts of bright coal are used as the non-polymeric compound, and as the additive, in Examples 1 and 2, stearic acid, and in Example 3, palmitic acid. The fibres were oxidized at a rate of 1‹ C./min. to 230‹ C. and carbonized at 50‹ C./hour to 1000‹ C. Synthetic polymers and natural or synthetic rubbers may be included in the compositions.
