Abstract
1356502 Kettles &c. BELLING & CO Ltd 3 May 1972 [4 May 1971] 20683/72 Heading A4A [Also in Division G3] A liquid boiler heated by an electric heating element 2 has an electronic temperature sensor 8 exposed to liquid vapour when the liquid boils, the sensor being connected electrically to a current controlled switch device 4, 5 to interrupt the supply to the element 2 when the liquid boils. The term electronic temperature sensor is intended to include any device which has a temperature responsive electric-variable whose temperature coefficient is higher than the resistance/temperature coefficient of metals. In the embodiments described the sensor 8 is a thermistor with a positive or negative resistance/ temperature coefficient. As shown, the heating element 2 is supplied from A.C. supply 14 by relay contacts 4. A full wave-rectifier 16 supplies energizing current to relay coil 5 by way cf a smoothing capacitor 17. A normally non-conducting transistor 18 shunts the coil 5. A steam sensitive thermistor 8 is connected in the base emitter path of the transistor 18. When the temperature of thermistor 8 rises sufficiently it permits the transistor 18 to conduit. The relay coil 5 is thereby de-energized to open contacts 4. A second "bail dry" thermistor 8a which is thermally connected to the heating element 2 to sense its temperature is connected in parallel to the thermistor 8. In an alternative embodiment a normally conducting transistor is connected in series with the relay coil 5, and the thermistor is connected to its base to render it non-conducting when the liquid bails. In one embodiment the relay coil is shunted by a thyristor whose trigger electrode is connected to the thermistor 8. The relay may be replaced by a thyristor, a thyristor pair or a triac triggered directly by the thermistor or via a transistor. The thermistor 8 may be mounted in a steam duct in the housing of an electric kettle, in a washing machine, coffee percolator, or fat frier. The thermistor 8 may act to permanently de-energize the heating element on boiling, or it may cause the element to be switched on and off to keep the liquid temperature constant. The thermistor may be replaced by a semiconductor diode or a transistor.
