Abstract

1355979 Preventing erosion E NIELSEN and F LERCHE-SVENDSEN 16 July 1971 [20 July 1970] 33628/71 Heading E1H Parallel chains of artificial seaweed for preventing erosion are formed of hydrophobic bundles of non-woven strips 1 of e.g. polypropylene which have a density not substantially higher than water and which are intermittently joined together at points 2, the lengths of the strips between adjacent joining points differing. The chains which are formed by drawing the strips off spools and then interconnecting them, are anchored to the sea-bed at some of the joining points, either by ropes 3 and embedded pipes 4, or by being entwined with similar strips extending between anchoring concrete blocks, or by having concrete blocks cast around them. The chains may be assembled in a criss-cross fashion to provide a preformed erosion preventing mat. Thicker reinforcing strips may be included in a bundle. Preferred strip members and sizes are given.
