1355966 Heating apparatus; water heaters PARKINSON COWAN APPLIANCES Ltd 18 Aug 1971 [29 Aug 1970 2 April 1971 (2) 18 May 1971] 416/9670 8574/71 8575/71 and 15512/71 Headings F4T and F4A Apparatus for heating a fluid comprises a plurality of inlet orifices for feeding a fuel/air mixture to a combustion chamber and a plurality of outlet passages defined entirely by a core of heat conducting material for discharging the products of combustion. The embodiment of Fig. 1 comprises two blocks 11 and 12 of extruded aluminium formed with recesses 13 which co-operate to form a combustion chamber and grooves which form inlet orifices 15 and outlet passages 16, plates 18 and 19 defining exhaust and inlet manifolds and the outer surface of the blocks being formed with fins 17 to transfer heat to a fluid, e.g. air flowing thereover. The embodiment of Fig. 2 comprises a core 37 of heat conducting spaced laminations 38 through which pass conduits 41 for water to be heated, a fuel/air mixture being introduced through a pipe 45 and inlet orifices 44 in a cylindrical piece of metallic mesh 42 and burned in a combustion chamber 43 and the products of combustion passing through outlet passages 48 defined in the core 37. In a third embodiment intended for use as an immersion heater a generally cuboidal laminated core of aluminium has an apertured metal plate spaced from one side thereof, the apertures in the plate forming inlet orifices, the space between the plate and the core forming a combustion chamber and slots in the core forming outlet passages, the whole being arranged with an electrical igniter in a sealed tapering housing. In a fourth embodiment a conduit carrying a fluid such as water to be heated passes through an aluminium block which is formed with a plurality of stepped cross-section cylindrical passages, a fuel/air mixture being introduced through the narrower part of each passage and burned to produce a flame anchored at the step in the cross-section.
