Abstract

1355701 Fibres of cross-linked acrylonitrile FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 30 April 1971 [2 May 1970] 12431/71 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Filaments and fibres of cross-linked acrylonitrile copolymers are obtained by forming a filament or fibre from a copolymer of acrylonitrile and 1-40%, by weight of the copolymer, of a vinyl azetidinone monomer of the formula wherein R and R 1 are independently H or methyl, e.g. by wet-spinning from a dimethyl formamide solution into an aqueous dimethyl formamide coagulation bath, and then crosslinking the copolymer by treatment with hot water or steam during the finishing stage of the filament or fibre production. The copolymer may optionally include units of an acid monomer, e.g. acrylic acid or styrenesulphonic acid to enhance the cross-linking of the copolymer. In examples the copolymer filaments are crosslinked by heating under tension on a tenter frame at 150‹ C. for 15 minutes in saturated steam. The cross-linked filaments and fibres have good whiteness, increased modulus, low shrinkage and good crimp stability.
