Abstract
1355614 Nuclear fuel W R GRACE & CO 11 April 1972 [12 April 1971] 16615/72 Heading G6C Carbide, nitride, or carbonitride nuclear fuel is prepared by mixing carbon or a source of carbon with a solution of a salt of an actinide metal and a salt of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, or a rare earth metal, precipitating a mixture of oxides and carbon, drying the precipitate and heating it in a vacuum, an inert or reducing atmosphere, nitrogen or a nitrogen-yielding gas, or a carbonaceous gas. The carbon may be dispersed by means of specified anionic dispersing agents; alternatively a sugar or finely divided polyethylene may be used as the source of carbon. The precipitating agent is preferably ammonia, but reference is also made to NaOH, KOH, and mineral acids. In examples a mixture of aqueous ammonia and a carbon dispersion is reacted with a solution of uranyl nitrate and zirconyl nitrate. The precipitate is filtered off, washed, dried, and heated in hydrogen and then in argon; after crushing and re-heating, a solid solution of uranium and zirconium carbides is obtained. Other metal salts referred to are TiOCl 2 , ZrOCl 2 , UO 2 Cl 2 , HfOCl 2 , Th(NO 3 ) 4 , ammonium metavanadate, and sodium and potassium niobate.
