Abstract

Planes and auxiliary surfaces for varying draught.-A laminated wooden hydrovane having a flat or convex underside is located above and is bolted to the forward ends of the skids 12, the rear ends of which are held the requisite distance apart by the usual cross-bar 13 engaging with brackets 14. The skids are secured to the fuselage 15 by struts 16, 17, 18 arranged in the shape of the letter N and with the lower end of the foremost strut secured at 19 to the hydrovane 11. The quadrilateral frames thus constituted are braced by wires. The wood hydrovane may be extended considerably beyond the skids without bracing the portions between and beyond the skids. In a modification, the hydrovane has a downward camber towards its centre and is strengthened by an A-shaped frame 22 secured by ties to the skids. The grain of the wood of the laminµ of the hydrovane may run lengthways or diagonally and in reversed direction in adjacent laminµ, and closed internal cavities may be provided.
