Abstract

1355233 Cosmetic compositions comprising polymers COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 1 Oct 1971 [16 Nov 1970 (3)] 45831/71 Heading A5B [Also. in Divisions C3 and C5] Cosmetic compositions (i.e. compositions for application to the skin, hair and oral cavity for aesthetic functions comprise (I) 0.05 to 10% by weight of a water-soluble aminopolyureylene resin having a M,W. of 300 to 10,000 and having the repeating unit:- wherein X is -NH-, -N(C 1-22 alkyl)-. wherein Y is O or S and n is 2 or 3 and (II) a compatible, non-toxic vehicle which is preferably an aqueous C 2-3 alcohol, a watersoluble synthetic organic detergent or a waterinsoluble polishing agent. Where the composition is one for grooming the hair, the resin is present preferably in an amount of 0.25 to 10% by weight of the composition, the remainder of the composition comprising 90 to 99.75% of an aqueous vehicle containing 0.5 to 65% by weight of the composition of a non-toxic, substantially non-volatile hair grooming agent containing a hydroxyl group and which is preferably mineral oil, castor oil, monohydric or polyhydric alcohols containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms. C 1-3 alkyl and hydroxyalkyl esters of C 8-18 fatty acids, mixed polyethylene glycol polypropylene glycols of M.W. 400 to 4000 and lower alkoxy polypropylene glycols having a M.W. of greater than 1000. Where the composition is one for improving the condition of the oral cavity it preferably contains 0.05 to 3% by weight of the resin, the vehicle being a compatible, non-toxic oral carrier. The carrier may comprise a water-insoluble dental polishing agent, glycerine, propylene glycol or sorbitol humectant, a gelling agent and water, in which case the composition is in the form of a dental cream. Dentfrice compositions may also be prepared in powder or tablet form. The compositions may also be prepared in the form of a mouthwash in which case the carrier comprises suitably a flavoured, aqueous alcoholic vehicle containing 4 to 70% of a C 2-3 alkanol based on the weight of the composition. A carrier-inhibiting thiocarbamate may be added to the oral compositions. Examples describe the preparation of a toothpaste, chewable dental tablet and mouth rinse.
