Abstract
1354899 Wells &c CAMCO INC 3 May 1971 [30 June 1970] 12628/71 Heading E1F A safety valve for use in well tubing comprises a tubular housing 42 having axially spaced seals 44, 46 and a telescopically movable member 52 having a plurality of pistons 56, 58, 60 co-operating with respective portions of the interior wall of the valve body and openings 62, 64, 66 to form expansible pressure chambers by which it is biassed downwardly in response to pressure in the annulus 40, surrounding the tubing, to force open a pivoted flap valve 48. The valve may be located in a tubing mandrel 12. The mandrel includes a passage 22 in which the valve is supported by latching dogs 90, and a passage 34 having openings 37 communicating with the annulus 40. Pressurized fluid in the annulus 40 passes via the openings 37 and passage 34, to the openings 62, 64 and 66 and depresses the pistons 56, 58 and 60 on the member 52 against the action of a spring 88 so that the flap valve is opened. The area of the lower end 86 of the member 52 is smaller than that of the upper end 84. Under normal flow conditions the flap valve is open. Reduction of the pressure in the annulus 40 allows the member 52 to rise and the flap valve closes under the action of a spring (not shown). Increase of pressure in the tubing below the valve beyond a predetermined value (e.g. if the well over produces) overcomes the effect of the difference in areas 86 and 84 and forces the member 52 upwards so that the flap valve closes. The seals 44, 46 prevent production from leaking into the annulus 40. The upper end of the passage 34 contains a plug 38 or a flow control unit for gas lift operations. When it is desired to retrieve the safety valve, the plug 38 &c is replaced by a blanking plug which seals off the openings 37. In a modifica tion, the mandrel is omitted and the valve is located in a section of tubing.
