Abstract

1354373 Making collapsible tubes; tubeexpanders JOHN DALE Ltd 25 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 5569/71 Headings B3A and B3J [Also in Divisions B2 B6 and B8] A nestable, collapsible tube is made by tapering a cylindrical tube, enamelling the external surface of the tapered tube and printing the enamelled tube surface using a printing plate which is angularly inclined to the longitudinal axis of the tube. A collapsible toothpaste tube is made by first threading the nozzle of an extruded aluminium cylindrical tube which is thereafter annealed at 380-420‹ C. After flaring the open end of the tube, it is fed on to an expandable mandrel of the type as described in Specification 1,291,839. The mandrel rod is reciprocated by a mechanism as described in Specification 1,314,863 so as to produce a tapered tube wall having an included angle of 1 degree 50 minutes. The tapered tube is transferred from the mandrel to an enamelling apparatus comprising a rotatable disc mounting tube receiving tapered arbors, each of which is rotatable about its axis. Enamel is deposited on the external surface of the tube as the arbor and disc rotate relative to an enamelling roller, which is inclined to the axis of the rotatable disc by an angle equal to the degree of tapering of the tube. The enamelled surface of the tube is printed by a printing apparatus similar in design to the enamelling apparatus. The tube is passed, after enamelling and printing, through a drying oven at 100-200‹ C. After capping the nozzle and flaring the open end of the tube, it is conveyed to a stacking machine (see Division B8) which nests the tubes within each other. The stacked tubes are finally sealed in plastics and sterilized.
