Abstract
1353974 Monolithic structural member; bridges J P SKINNER 25 Aug 1971 [18 Sept 1970] 39824/71 Headings E1G and E1W A monolithic structural member 90 has outwardly extending portions 92, 92a formed as frusto-conical shapes. The portions 92, 92a provide smaller coplanar load bearing surfaces 108, 108a and under these hollow pockets. Between and surrounding the portions 12 are longitudinally and laterally extending base portions 94. By virtue of their hollow pockets, these members may be used as floating foundation slabs, Fig. 2, on unsubstantial ground. The members are formed of thermoplastics, glass fibre reinforced plastics, galvanized sheet steel or foam polyurethane. These members 90 rest on pads of sand or gravel. Floor load surface members 106 are laid over the members 90 and the intercommunicating channels 110 may be used to provide heating or ventilating. Upper floors or roofs may utilise the similar members 90. The hollows 120 may be concealed by ceiling panels or used for lighting fixtures. Bridge decks use similar members 90a of foamed polyurethane with their load bearing smaller surfaces 108a resting on cables 124 looped over and spanning anchorages at either bridge end. Tie bars 134 keep parallel cables separate and the interengaging members 90a are covered with cast in situ concrete 138.
