Abstract

1353901 Casting processes C A PAYNE 26 May 1971 [4 March 1970] 10325/70 Heading B3F Inoculating, alloying, deoxidizing or other additives (e.g. FeSi) are added to molten metal flowing to or within a casting mould. The additive is contained within two sheets of flexible consumable material, and prior to casting, the flexible consumable material enclosing the additive is bent or flexed to conform to the contour of the mould cavity or of the pouring passages. In the examples, waxed paper discs sandwiching powdered ferrosilicon were moulded to form bowls which were accommodated in runner basins in the casting mould or a disc was shaped by folding into a cone which was located in a downsprue of corresponding shape. Alternatively, the additive can be packed in the tubes formed by corrugations in corrugated paper or card.
