Abstract

1353429 Data transmission; transistor switching circuits INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 13 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 32732/72 Headings H4P and H3T An input signal at ENT operates through a light link CD to control the supply of equal and opposite constant currents I1, I2 to a telegraph line LT. A light-emitting diode D3 turns on a transistor Q0 when an input signal is present, so that a further transistor Q1 is on when an input signal is present and off if it is not. Q2 is on when Q1 is off, and Q5 is on when Q1 is on. Q2, Q5 respectively control current sources GI1, GI2, in which Q6, Q8, Q9 are on when Q2 is on, and Q3, Q10 are on when Q5 is on. Constant current I1 thus flows to the line LT through D1 from GI1, or else flows I2 from the line LT through D2 to GI2. An overvoltage on the line is sensed by conduction of further transistors Q4, Q7 according to its polarity, and these act to turn off the associated one of Q2, Q5, thereby turning off the constant current source which was up to that time conducting. The high impedance of the constant current sources limits to a safe value any current flow due to the overvoltage. Resistor potential dividers R20, R21 and R23, R24 reduce considerably the voltage appearing at the emitters of Q4, Q7 as a result of the overvoltage.
