Abstract

1353372 Electrophotographic copy paper XEROX CORP 25 June 1971 [29 June 1970 16 Dec 1970] 29916/71 Heading D2B An electrophotographic copy paper, which has improved scorch resistance, conductivity and strength retention under conditions of heating comprises paper-making fibres having incorporated therein a bulking material of low apparent density relative to that of the papermaking fibres, in a proportion of up to 10 per cent by weight of the paper-making fibres and has as a surface size thereon a composition comprising a binder, a salt other than clay in an amount of from 1 to 50 per cent by weight based on said binder and clay in an amount of from 38 to 50 per cent by weight of the dry solids content of the composition, the mixture of salt and clay not exceeding 60 per cent of the dry solids content of the total composition. Specified bulking materials are hollow spheres of thermoplastic material, foamed starch and cellulosic materials angulate fibrous fragments of foamed aminoplast e.g. urea/ formaldehyde resins, hollow glass or ceramic material and metal microspheres. Specified binders are starch, ethylated starch, polystyrene latex and polyvinyl alcohol. Specified metal salts are magnesium, zinc and sodium sulphate. The paper having bulking material incorporated therein may be subjected to mechanical rubbing e.g. with cotton fabric prior to sizing.
