Abstract

1353194 Ratchet clutches FORMSPRAG CO 28 June 1971 30131/71 Heading F2C A sprag 10 for a one-way clutch has mass reducing holes 30, 31 bored through its axial length to provide slight radial yieldability of the sprag which increases the area of contact between the sprag and driving and driven races 13, 14. The holes 30, 31 may be positioned so that centrifugal force tends to energize or de-energize the sprags. As shown, the sprags 10 are retained in a cage 15 between driving and driven races 13, 14. The sprags 10 are provided with noses 27 and tails 28 which prevent "roll-over". An energizing garter spring 16 engages recesses 26 in the sprag ends. As shown energization is assisted by centrifugal force. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the sprag (10<SP>1</SP>) has three holes (34), (35), (36) arranged so that centrifugal force tends to de-energize the sprag. In Figs. 4-6 (not shown) straight sided sprags (40) between driving and driven races (38), (39) have mass reducing holes (52) on either side of trunnions (41) engaged by energizing spiral springs (42).
