Abstract
1352872 Electrodes for mercury cathode cells IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Feb 1972 [18 March 1971] 7211/71 Heading C7B [Also in Divisions B2 and H1] An electrode, e.g. for use in electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions using a mercury cathode, fuel cells, electro-synthesis or cathodic protection, comprises a support member of a film forming metal (titanium, zirconium, niobium, tantalum or tungsten) having a first coating of a mixture of 20-80 wt. per cent of one or more platinum group metal oxides and a film-forming metal oxide, and a second layer of a film-forming metal oxide. The coatings may be applied as a paint composition of thermally decomposable organo-compounds of a film-forming metal, e.g. an alkoxide or alkoxyhalide thereof, and - (for the first coating only) - a thermally decomposable compound, e.g. a halide, halo-acid complex or resinate, of at least one platinum metal in an organic liquid, e.g. pentanol, and thereafter heating in an oxidising atmosphere to convert the metal compounds to the metal oxides. The coatings may each comprise a plurality of layers sequentially produced as above. In the examples the first layer is RuO 2 + TiO 2 ; the second TiO 2 .
