1352261 Grinding FAITH PLATING CORP 16 March 1971 7039/71 Heading B3D [Also in Division E2] An automobile bumper grinding apparatus comprises a carriage 3 which is movable along a main frame 2 and carries a clamp means 4 for holding a bumper 44 in a pair of pivotal brackets 41, an abrading means 9 which is supported by a cantilever section 7 of an auxiliary frame 6 fixed to the main frame, and means for reciprocating the carriage 3 along the main frame, rotating the clamp means 4 to position the bumper in relation to the abrading means and driving the abrading means. The carriage 3 has V-grooved rollers 23 engaging tracks 17 on the main frame and opposite ends of the carriage are connected to a chain 72 running over sprockets 71, 78 one of which is driven by a chain drive 68 from a reversible motor 66 controlled by a reversing switch 82 actuated by cams 86, 87 on the carriage. The carriage has a pair of uprights 24 each of which rotatably supports a stub shaft 27 welded to one arm 42 of a U-shaped bracket, the brackets being joined by a beam 43. The arms 41 carry resilient blocks 47 against which the bumper is clamped by resilient blocks 48 carried by the rods of pneumatic piston-and-cylinder devices 57 mounted on the other arms 41 of the brackets. The stub shafts 27 are connected by chain drives to sprockets on a shaft 33 journalled in the uprights 24 and secured to a quadrant 34 meshing with a gear 36 connected by a reduction gear 38 and chain to a motor 39 secured to the carriage. Actuation of the motor 39 acts through the quadrant to pivot the brackets and hence the bumper about a longitudinal axis of the carriage. The auxiliary frame 6 is secured to the main frame and supports a pair of rods 98 beneath its cantilever section 7. A substantially triangular shapedplate 112 has blocks (122, Fig. 9, not shown) slidable on the rods for transverse movement of the plate. A pivot 114 at the apex of the plate supports one end of a beam 126 having at its other end a carrier 127 for pairs of rollers 128, 129 engaging the upper and lower surfaces 117, 118 of the plate to guide the beam for movement above the pivot. A lower plate 132 of the carrier 127 supports a pedestal 141 having a pivot 163 about which a tubular housing 142 can be adjusted and secured in position by a bolt 173 passing through a slot 172 in a segment 161 secured to the housing. A plate on the housing carries a motor 146 driving a pulley on which the abrading means in the form of a belt 159 is entrained, the belt also running over an idler pulley 157 mounted on the rod of a pneumatic piston-andcylinder device 148 which is extended to tension the belt. A handle 176 is provided for rocking the pulley 157 about the axis of the device 148, a handle 167 is provided for moving the abrading means about the pivot 114 and the plate 112 along the rods 98, and a pneumatic device 136 is operable to pivot the abrading means about the pivot 163.
