Abstract

1352018 Gauging bottle necks BEATSON CLARK & CO Ltd 18 May 1972 [18 May 1971] 15642/71 Heading G1M A piston 2, Figs. 1, 2, may be operated to lift rods 9, 8 and 13 to cause a frusto-conical cam 14 to pivot bottle holding tong members 10 apart about the axes of rollers 15 against the action of a spring 16. Each cam contains a spring pressed plunger 25 which operates as a plug gauge in the bottle neck when the rod 13 is lowered and the tongs gripped around the bottle, so that if the neck is too small or blocked the plunger is pushed back into the cylinder 24 and causes a valve 27 to close off the bottom of an air conduit 23 and produce a pulse of back pressure in the gauging airline, which pulse is sensed and used to operate a bottle rejection mechanism (not shown). In Fig. 3, (not shown) each pair of tongs is operated by a piston rod carrying a cross-link (49) acting directly on the tong linkage. Any suitable electrical, electromechanical or electromagnetic means can be associated with the gauge plunger to sense its movement and activate the rejection means.
