1351937 Cash dispensers DE LA RUE INSTRUMENTS Ltd 28 May 1971 [4 June 1970] 26941/70 Heading G4X A machine for dispensing banknotes of a plurality of different denominations comprises means for storing a corresponding plurality of stacks of banknotes, means for selectively removing individual banknotes from each such stack, means for transporting the banknotes to a dispensation station, means for sensing the passage of each banknote through the transportation means, means for selecting the value of money to be dispensed in each denomination, and means for effecting the dispensation from each stack of the required number of notes. In the embodiment described the machine comprises an input/control assembly (A), a two denomination, ú5 and ú1, banknote dispenser (B) and also a coin dispenser (C) (Figs. 1, 2, 5 and 6, not shown). The input/control assembly, Fig. 4, has an opening 13 for the insertion of a cheque X which is conveyed by belt systems 16, 17 and 22 firstly to a printer unit, to be described later, and then to a receptacle 37. The amount required in each banknote denomination and coinage is entered by means of a keyboard 6 to 10, having both value-indicative and denomination-indicative keys (see also Fig. 2, not shown), these amounts being stored in respective up-down electronic registers. A series of decade printing wheels are set to correspond with the individual stored amounts and an adder circuit combines the three amounts the total being indicated on a visual display device 11. On the depression of a disperse key (9) a suction system is connected to the oscillating feed arm 56, Fig. 3, associated with the stack of banknotes N of the highest denomination required, and the banknotes are fed by rollers 58, 59, 62 and 63 between a lamp L and a photosensitive device 60 to a tined stacking wheel 64, from which they are stripped by arms 70 and held in a delivery stage 65 on a pivoted flap 71 of the assembly (B). If two substantially overlapping banknotes are detected by the photosensitive device 60 a signal is directed to solenoid 66 to move a deflector arm 67 into the path of the banknotes and direct them to a receptacle 69. However if the overlap is small i.e. they are of excessive overall length both banknotes are directed to the delivery stage and a warning is given to the operator to check the amount delivered. In normal operation the passage of each single banknote past the photosensitive device generates a pulse that is fed back to decrement the corresponding electronic register. After dispensation of the required number of higher denomination banknotes the suction system is applied to the feed arm of the lower denomination stack. The photosensitive devices for each banknote are coupled so as to detect if through some fault two banknotes of different denomination are removed simultaneously. The coin dispenser has a plurality of coin tubes and associated selectively operable coin ejectors and is programmed so as to dispense the minimum number of coins necessary for any amount required. During the dispensation operation a solenoid 27 is energized once to effect printing of the dispensed amounts on the cheque and then again, after removal of the cheque to print the amounts on a tally roll 31. Various inhibit mechanisms are provided to prevent entry of amounts on the keyboard or dispensation when, for example, the cheque X is not correctly positioned in the opening 13, either of the banknote stacks is empty, the receptacle 37 for cheques is full or the flap 71 is not closed. Warning lamps 40 are provided to indicate, for example, when the banknotes stacks are nearing depletion, the deflector 67 is in an operative position and the passage of two partially overlapped banknotes to the stage 65. In an alternative arrangement switches may be provided on the keyboard to dispense the banknotes according to a predetermined programme such as to give the minimum possible total number of banknotes, or a predetermined minimum number of the lower denomination banknotes. The machine may also be adapted for operation by punched or magnetic tape.
