Abstract
1351780 Collapsible steering columns FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 27 July 1971 35078/71 Heading B7H A steering shaft is located in a shock absorbing outer tube of a collapsible steering column the shaft having a hollow non-circular first part which slidably receives a complementary second part with a strip of resilient material located between the parts. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 2, the strip is wavy with the end 9 bent over to prevent movement of the strip into the hollow part 1 before collapse of the column. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the strip simultaneously engages two adjacent sides of each part with the length 15 wavy as in the first embodiment and the adjacent length of strip (17), Fig. 3, not shown, having edges 18 engaging the inner wall of the part 1 with the intermediate portion 19 being engaged by the part 3.
