Abstract

1351486 Filter element ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 6 Aug 1971 [8 Aug 1970] 37005/71 Addition to 1253117 Heading B1D A filter element comprises a paper strip folded about a longitudinal line 7 and wound helically, the free edges of adjacent turns being sealed and bonded by thermoplastic adhesive 3 to define two helical spaces open to opposite ends of the roll and separated by filter paper, portion 5 on one side of fold line 7 having transverse corrugations 6 while portion 10 on the other side is not corrugated. The corrugations may be in the outermost portion or in the inner portion as shown, and serve to stiffen the roll against compression, to accommodate the relative stretching or compression of the two portions of the strip during the winding and to space the layers of paper apart so that all the paper is available for filtration. In manufacture, one edge of the strip is first folded over to form margin 9, then portion 5 and margin 9 are corrugated, the strip is folded about line 7 and finally wound onto cardboard tube 4. The corrugations may be non-uniform, varying lengthwise of the strip or so shaped that the total inlet area at end 13 exceeds the total area sealed by adhesive at end 13. Margin 9 ensures that inlet space 11 is larger than outlet space 12 to accommodate filtered solids. The paper may be smooth or creped, and the element is located in a housing (not shown) whose inlet and outlet communicate with ends 13, 14.
