Abstract

1351468 Stud and socket fastenings PAL POSSO 15 June 1971 [23 June 1970 30 March 1971] 27903/71 Heading E2B A box for the packaging of a reel comprises a body 1 and a cover 2 integral respectively with a boss 3, 4 for centring the reel and a fastening device comprising an expansible means and a rotary cam wherein the expansible means comprises at least three flexible blades 18 extending parallel to the axis of the cam rotatably mounted in the boss 4, the base of each blade is immobilised in the boss 4, the free end of each blade bears against the cam and has an outwardly projecting tooth 27 and the boss 3 has a central opening bordered by a truncated seat converging towards the boss 4 and against which the teeth 27 of the blades 18 are pressed by the cam in order to effect simultaneous fastening of the cover to the body and approach of the cover and body in order to tighten on the reel. The boss 3 is closed by a lid 8 and the boss 4 is closed by a dished member 9 which is rotated to actuate the cam which is screwed to a projecting lug 20 on the member 9. Each blade fits in a recess provided in a lug 10 on the boss 4 and abuts a surface of the cam which has undulations whereby turning the cam either projects the teeth 27 to abut the truncated seat 30 to fasten the cover to the body and draw the two parts together or allows the blades to resiliently return to its recess in the lug 10 and release the cover from the body. In modifications the cam may rotate in the boss 3 and the blades may be connected by a frangible member which engages a part annular recess in the lug 10 and which breaks to free the blades when the fastening device is assembled. A pin 32 on the member 9 engages in an arcuate groove 33 in the boss 4. In a further modification Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the cam 16' has an annular shoulder 34' and has recesses into each of which extends a catch 38' on the end of a rib 37' integral with each blade 18'. The inner surface of the recesses in the cam have arcuate surfaces joined by a notch 41' and the outer surfaces have staggered ramps 43' to ensure positive retraction of the blades. Alternatively the cam has tongues the surfaces of which have the arcuate surfaces and the tongues fit in slots in the blades.
