Abstract

1350961 Photo-electric testing: torsional oscillation testing LONZA Ltd 19 April 1971 [13 Oct 1970] 24269/71 Heading G1A In an apparatus for testing a characteristic such as shear modulus of a plastic test piece 3 Fig.1 in an oven 11, the temperature of which may be varied, the sample is torsionally vibrated by solenoids 14, 15 acting on armatures 12, 13, and the amplitude and periodicity of oscillation is read by a photo-electric arrangement in which an aperture 24 in a disc 8 obscures in the rest position a half of the light beam between a source 21 and a photo-cell 22, the alternating current in the cell output providing the necessary information. The source may be a luminescent diode or a filament lamp and the cell a photo-diode or photo-transistor. The beam path includes a fixed aperture 23 which may be shaped as in Fig. 3, and the aperture 24 may be replaced by a shutter blade which intercepts half of the beam in the rest position.
