Abstract

1350594 Sputter etching; making blades, knives and needles GILLETTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 May 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 5508/70 Headings B3V and B3A [Also in Divisions B4 and G2] A cutting edge of a razor blade, knife, scalpel or hypodermic needle is sharpened by sputter etching. In the embodiment described, a layer of 100 Š to 1 micron in thickness is removed from the cutting edge of a stainless steel razor blade to form a facet c having a length of 400 nm. and an included wedge angle of 45-55 degrees. The included wedge angle 0 of the remainder of the blade is 20-30 degrees. Prior to sharpening, the blade may be coated with a chromium-platinum alloy or chromium metal of 100 nm. thickness applied by sputtering. After the sharpening step, the blade may be coated with fluorocarbon and/or chromium, a chromium-platinum alloy, an oxide, a nitrile or a carbide.
