Abstract
1349669 Oxidation-resistant acrylonitrile copolymer compositions MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 23 July 1971 [28 Sept 1970] 34709/71 Headings C3P and C3G Oxidation-resistant acrylonitrile copolymer compositions comprise (I) an acrylonitrile copolymer or copolymer composition containing as a constituent an unsaturated monomer (1) having a polyethylene oxide chain or an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer chain of the formula wherein n is a positive integer from 10-200 and m is zero or a positive integer from 1-100, and (II) 0À01-5À0%, by weight of the copolymer or copolymer composition, of a phenolic antioxidant of the formula wherein -X- is -S-, -O-, -CH 2 SCH 2 -, or an alkyl (C 1-20 )-substituted or unsubstituted alkylene radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are each alkyl radicals having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkyl (C 1-20 )- or hydroxy-substituted or unsubstituted phenyl radicals, or an alkyl (C 1-20 ) radical having a hydroxyphenyl or a phenyl substituent, and may be the same as or different from one another; a, b, c and d are each zero or positive integers from 1 to 4, 1 # a+b # 4, 1 # c+d # 4; and at least one of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, and at least one of R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are bonded to carbon atoms adjacent to the carbon atom to which the OH radical is attached. In component (I) the polyalkylene oxide-containing monomer may be copolymerized with acrylonitrile and optionally other monomers; or a polymer of said monomer may act as base polymer for the graft copolymerization of acrylontrile; or it may be graft copolymerized on polyvinylpyrrolidone and used thus in admixture with a conventional acrylonitrile copolymer; or a copolymer of said monomer and acrylonitrile can be admixed with another acrylonitrile copolymer; or a homopolymer of the polyalkylene oxide-containing monomer may be admixed with an acrylonitrile copolymer. The polyalkylene oxidecontaining monomer is preferably one that contains at least one acrylic or alkacrylic ester or amide group, or an itaconic, maleic or fumaric-type ester or amide group. Optional comonomers for the acrylonitrile copolymers include vinyl acetate, acrylic, methacrylic and itaconic acids and alkyl esters and amides thereof, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, vinylidene chloride, vinyl compounds containing a sulphonic acid group or salt thereof, and basic monomers having a tertiary nitrogen atom. The compositions may also include ultraviolet absorbers, e.g. benzophenone and benzotriazole compounds, and peroxide decomposers, e.g. a sulphur or phosphite compound. Solutions of the compositions in aqueous or non-aqueous solvents for acrylonitrile polymers can be used to obtain fibres or films.
