Abstract
1349528 Temperature control of oil hydrogenation, evaporating and condensing CHEMETRON CORP 19 April 1971 [8 April 1970] 26245/71 Headings B1B B1F and B1X [Also in Division C5] A method for the batch hydrogenation of unsaturated oil comprises heating the oil by heat exchange with a condensable heat exchange medium, e.g. steam, and condensing at least some of the heat exchange medium under a first pressure with heat exchange with the oil to provide a body of liquid medium in thermal communication with the heated oil, introducing hydrogen into the heated oil to establish an exothermic hydrogenation reaction, removing heat from the reacting oil to control hydrogenation temperature by allowing heat exchange medium to vaporize from the body of liquid medium under a second pressure lower than the said first pressure, and subsequently further reducing the pressure over the body of liquid medium to cool the hydrogenated oil to filtering temperature. In the figure, a batch of soybean oil with catalyst is introduced into the vessel 10 through 14. Valves 56 and 67 are closed and valve 52 is opened to admit steam at 150 p.s.i.g. into the upper end of coil 48. Condensate valve 62 is opened and the steam heats the oil to 300F. Condensate valve 62 is closed and steam condenses in the coil until the coil is 50-75% full. Valve 52 is closed, and valves 56 and 67 are opened. Hydrogen is introduced at 5 p.s.i.g. through sparger 32. As the oil temperature rises, control regulator valve 90 begins to open and drains condensate from condenser 76 into the lower end of the heat exchange coil 48. As heat is generated by the hydrogenation it is absorbed by vaporization of the coolant in coil 48. As coolant vaporises more liquid coolant is introduced into the lower end of the coil until a state of equilibrium exists, the vapour from the coolant passing through vapour 54 to separator 58, and dry vapour is condensed in condenser 76 by water coolant. When hydrogenation is complete, all the condensate is drained from condenser 76 and causes reduction in pressure in the condensing system.
