Abstract
1349026 Partitioning UNITED STATES GYPSUM CO 4 Aug 1971 [5 Oct 1970] 36608/71 Heading E1W A partitioning assembly comprises two spaced parallel rows 20, 24 of partitioning panels 48 adapted to be assembled independently by employing studs each of which comprises a web 62 having at one end an interlocking arrangement consisting of either a pair of flanges 66, 68, Fig. 3, or a single flange 68a, Fig. 6, for interlocking with a kerf in the or each adjacent vertical edge of one or two of the panels of one row, and a flange or bead formation 80 at the other end of the web for abutment with the back of the other row of panels. Preferably a punched-out tab 72 or equivalent formation (90, Fig. 8, not shown) is arranged opposite the or each kerf-engaging flange at each of a number, e.g. three, of positions along the stud to give additional support to the panels in said one row at heights where such additional support is desirable, e.g. at heights of three foot; three foot, eight inches; and four foot, four inches. The joins between panels in the two rows may be staggered, as shown in Fig. 2, or may be substantially opposite each other (Fig. 5, not shown) in which case the webs of the juxtaposed studs whose flanges are engaged with the kerfs of the panels in the two respective rows may be secured together. The form of stud 60a shown in Fig. 6 and having only a single flange 68a is used where it is desired to remove one panel 40a in one row without disturbing adjacent panels 40a in the same row. Preferably studs having two flanges are used for the other row of panels for security reasons. Alternatively, adjacent pairs of studs 60a engaged with the kerfs in one row may be secured together by screws (110, Fig. 11 not shown). The stud shown in Fig. 6 may be modified (Figs. 8-10, not shown). To ensure that the panels 40 abut and hide the studs the vertical edges of the panels are inclined away from each other from the front to the back of each panel. Where pairs of studs 60a are used, trim members (100, Fig. 11, not shown) may be inserted between the adjacent panel vertical edges. The top and bottom edges of the panels are mounted to conventional ceiling and floor runners 28, 26, the former providing channels to receive the top edges and the latter being adapted to receive screws for fastening the lower edges, the screw heads being then covered by base clips or members (32 or 34, Fig. 1, not shown).
