Abstract

1348825 Cutting sheet material GERBER GARMENT TECHNOLOGY Inc 29 June 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 30387/71 Heading B4B [Also in Divisions D1 and G1] Apparatus for holding sheet material in a fixed position, e.g. for cutting through a stack of fabric layers 14 by means of a reciprocating knife 12, comprises means 52 defining a supporting surface 54 and means for exerting fluid pressure above the material 14 to urge it against the supporting surface 54. The knife 12 is supported on a rotatable member 34 mounted on a carriage 18, traversible on guides 26, 28 of a second carriage 16, in turn movable on racks (20), 22, Fig. 1 (not shown), so that required shapes can be cut from the stationary material 14 under the control of a computer input. The surface means 52 comprises blocks of resilient material, e.g. cellular polyethylene, penetrable by the knife 12, the material 14 being held down by fluid pressure supplied by a blower 44 through pipes 62, 64 to compartments 42, 46 suspended parallel to and to move with the carriage 16. Elastomeric skirts 66, 68 may be provided around the compartments 42, 46, or perforated flanges (72), (76), Figs. 3-5 (not shown), may be provided internally or externally along the compartment peripheries. Alternatively, the carriage 16 may support a single compartment 90, pressurized by a blower 96 and enclosing the blade 12, Fig. 7. Further, Fig. 10 or Fig. 11 (not shown), an annular or cylindrical pressurized compartment 116 may be supported on the carriage 16 coaxially with the blade supporting member 34, the compartment being downwardly open, with skirt members (122), (124), Fig. 9 (not shown), or closed by a plate 134 provided with perforations 136, Fig. 10. Furthermore, Fig. 13, vertically movable rollers 166, 168, 182, 184 may support impervious belts 164, 168, having runs below the pressurized compartments 150, 152 for engaging the material 14.
