1348649 Clearing fishing lines J VARTDAL 29 June 1971 [30 June 1970] 30302/71 Heading A1A A fishing line 10 carrying a series of hooks 12 is cleared and baited for the next fishing operation while it is being hauled continuously onto a fishing boat and the fish from the previous operation are being removed by hand. As shown in Fig. 1 the line 10 is hauled across the boat round pulley 13, and along the boat through cleaning device 14, hook separator 15, magnetic unwinding apparatus 16, a further hook separator, and a magnetic hook guide 17 by hauling apparatus 18 which delivers the hooks onto rail 61 with the line hanging from them in a container 19 ready to be fed through the baiting machine 21. The line is centred by plates (not shown) before it enters the cleaning apparatus 14 where fish residues are removed by a first pair of cylinders 24, 24a and by cleaning teeth 28 spring-urged against further cylinders 24. At the entrance 42 of the unwinding apparatus, see Fig. 4, the hooks 12 engage one of the arms 30, 31 depending on each side of the line which are pivoted to swing out from the line and up when pulled in the direction of movement of the line to deliver the hooks to one of the magnetic fields generated by magnetised bars 33, 34 sandwiched between soft iron bars 35-38, see Fig. 5. The inner cylinder 32 carrying the magnets is journalled within support cylinder 40 and is rotated by hydraulic motor 46 through gear wheels 43, 44 to unwind the hook cords 11. In the hook guide 17, see Figs. 6, 7, 8, a second hook separator 53 and guide teeth 52, 54 carried by a pivoted plate 55 ensure that the hooks travel pointdown along the bottom of channel 48 in the magnetic field generated by magnetised bar 49 lying against soft iron L-sectioned bar 50. Guide surface 47 deflects the hooks sideways past spring loaded plate 55 and upwards onto guide disc 58 where they are scrubbed by rotating steel wire bushes 66. A support wheel 63 engages in the groove of the line hauling pulley 59 to ensure a good grip and a deflector 65 prevents the line wrapping round the pulley. The pulley 59 and guide disc 58 are driven on the same axle by a hydraulic motor. The line is drawn from container 19 by hauler 20 while the hooks are baited and pass through guide pipe 70 into chambers in line tub 22.
