Abstract

1348639 Aromatic polysulphones IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 July 1971 [6 Aug 1970] 37948/70 Heading C3R Aromatic sulphone copolymers are prepared by reacting a polyaryl sulphone containing the repeat units -ArSO 2 -, where Ar is a bivalent aromatic residue which may vary from unit to unit in the polymer chain, at least some of which have an aromatic ether or thioether group in the polymer chain ortho or para to at least one -SO 2 - group, with an alkali metal salt of at least one halophenol or halothiophenol, or with essentially equimolar quantities of an alkali metal salt of at least one dihydric phenol or thiophenol and at least one dihalobenzenoid compound, the halogen atoms of the halophenol, halothiophenol and dihalobenzenoid compound being activated by an electron-attracting group in at least one of the positions ortho or para to the halogen atoms. The reaction may be carried out in the melt or in the presence of a dipolar aprotic liquid under anhydrous conditions. In the examples copolymers are prepared by heating in solvents the K salt of 4-(4-chlorophenyl sulphonyl)- phenol and a polyaryl sulphone having the repeating unit A similar copolymer can be prepared by heating a polyaryl sulphone having the repeating unit with equimolar amounts of bis-(4-chlorophenyl)- sulphone and the dipotassium salt of 2,2-bis- (4-hydroxyphenyl)propane. In another example a copolymer is prepared by heating the potassium salt of 4-(4-chlorophenylsulphonyl)- phenol with a polyaryl sulphone having repeating units of the structures
