Abstract
1347695 Acoustic sensing of changes in material cross-section ZELLWEGER Ltd USTER FACTORIES FOR APPARATUS & MACHINES 3 June 1971 [16 June 1970] 18783/71 Heading H4D [Also in Division D1] Variations in the cross-section of a textile product (e.g. a yarn, roving or sliver) are detected by passing it between a sound wave generator and sound pick-up and sensing resulting changes in the transit time of sound waves between the generator and pick-up. In the Fig. 2 embodiment a respective measurement station is provided for each of yarns 15<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>11</SP> ... 15<SP>n</SP> and includes a directional sound generator 10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>11</SP> ... 10<SP>n</SP> and a pick-up 12<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>11</SP> ... 12<SP>n</SP> feeding a transit-time discriminator 17<SP>1</SP>, 17<SP>11</SP> ... 17<SP>n</SP>. Since transit time is influenced also by air pressure or temperature, a reference sound path unchanged by the textile product is provided between generator 10 and pick-up 16, and the pick-up 16 output signal is time-compared with the other pick-up outputs in discriminators 17<SP>1</SP>, 17<SP>11</SP> ... 17<SP>n</SP>. The resulting measurement signals U<SP>1</SP> 3 , U<SP>11</SP> 3 ... U<SP>n</SP> 3 are then independent of the air pressure or temperature influences and may be applied to utilization devices 14<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>11</SP> ... 14<SP>n</SP> (e.g. indicator, recording or yarn-cutting devices, or regulating systems controlling the cross-section dimensions). In a simpler embodiment there are only two pick-ups one of which provides the reference sound path (Fig. 1, not shown).
