Abstract
1347469 Anode assembly for cathodic protection CORROSION & WELDING ENG Ltd 13 Dec 1971 [14 Dec 1970] 59311/70 Heading C7E An anode assembly for use in cathodic protection of underwater structures comprises a pipe 13 to be disposed with its lower end below- and its upper end above-water, an anode structure including an anode 1 of elongate form surrounded by a piston 14 freely slidable within pipe 13, sealing means 18, 19, 20, for co-operating between the anode structure and the pipe, and positioning means 23 for moving the anode between a lowered position (as shown) and a raised position in which the anode is within pipe 13. The anode material may be Si, Fe or Pb but is preferably platinized Ti, Nb, or Ta, usually in the form of a tube on a metallic support, e. g. of steel. Means 23 for raising the anode, e.g. to prevent damage in heavy seas, may be a plastics rope and winch; the upper end of pipe 13 may be sealed and provided with input means for fluid under pressure to drive out sea-water whilst the anode is raised and hold it in position when lowered; this latter function may also be carried out by filling tube 13 with water or by weighting the anode. Electrical conductor 22 is connected to the anode at 21 and to the corrodible structure, e.g. an off shore drilling rig. The anode may be encased in a plastics tube 10 packed with plastics filler 11.
