Abstract

1347447 Sail rigs E F HISCOCK 25 Aug 1972 39748/72 Heading B7V In a sail rig for a sail propelled vehicle the sail head is pivotally supported in an elevated position above the vehicle, the tack 38 of the sail may be positioned along an arc centred at a point on the vehicle substantially vertically below the sail head pivot point, and the clew 39 may be positioned along an arc centred on the tack. In a preferred embodiment, the luff 33 of a boat sail 31 is stiffened by a luff spar 36 the upper end of which is attached to a pivot 46 supported by a mast 44 and the lower end is fixed to a thrust boom 55 which is pivoted to a pulpit 59 on the boat vertically below the pivot 46. The foot of the sail is fastened to a boom 37 which is pivotally mounted on luff spar 35 as by U-shaped strap 40. The sail 31 is raised by halyard 71 which together with downhaul 77 controls the sail tension. A boom vang 83 may provide further downpull on the boom. Main sheet 87 is rigged in a conventional manner for positioning the free end of the boom, while the non-conventional rigging comprises a pair of fore sheets 95<SP>1</SP>, and an elastic retraction line 101 for the purpose of positioning thrust boom 55. The mast 44 is bifurcated at its lower end to allow for movement of tiller 18.
