Abstract
1347357 Motor vehicle headlamps CIBIE PROJECTEURS 19 April 1971 [14 May 1970] 26428/71 Heading F4R A dipped-beam motor vehicle headlamp comprising a parabolic reflector, a light source having a filament located in the vicinity of the principal focus of the reflector and masking means so associated with the filament that without further optical means the light emitted by the headlamp would be bounded by a single upper horizontal plane, is also provided with a number of prismatic reflecting or refractory surfaces which cause part of the emitted light to be deflected upwards and horizontally away from the central axis of the lamp so that the emitted light is bounded at its upper surface by two horizontal half-planes AB, CD on either side of the central axis which are of different heights and are joined by an inclined planar segment BD. The half-plane of greater height DC, coinciding with the horizontal plane through the central axis H of the lamp, is directed to the near-side of the roadway and the inclined plane is preferably inclined at an angle of 45 degrees. The prismatic surfaces are preferably moulded into the surface of the cover glass for the lamp, though they may alternatively be preformed and secured to the inner surface of the cover glass by adhesive or they may be located between the cover glass and the reflector. Alternatively suitable prismatic formations may be made in the surface of the reflector. Fig. 4 shows a front view of a headlamp designed for use with a light source having an axial filament partially surrounded by a hemicylindrical mask. The prismatic formations are arranged on the horizontal axis of the cover glass; the line of greatest slope of each prismatic formation is inclined both to its horizontal and vertical edges so as to produce the appropriate horizontal and vertical displacement of the beam. In the case of a lamp using a source having a horizontal transverse filament the prismatic formations are arranged adjacent to the vertical axis of the cover glass, Fig. 7 (not shown).
