Abstract
1346997 Rubber-resin-fibre laminates DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 6 July 1971 [21 July 1970] 35166/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A resin-fibre composite is produced by at least partly sheathing in rubber at least two matrices of cross-linkable resin, each containing at least one brittle filament, and simultaneously curing both resin and rubber. The composite may comprise alternate layers of resin and rubber or rods of the resin in a continuous rubber phase. The filaments may be carbon, boron or glass, the resin may be phenolic, epoxy, epoxy/phenolic, polyamide, polyimide, amide/imide copolymer, polyester or polybenzimidazole and the rubber natural rubber, polybutadiene, ethylene/propylene copolymer or polyurethane. The ratio of Youngs modulus between the relatively rigid resin and the flexible rubber is high, e.g. 1300 for the combination of epoxy resin and ethylene-propylene rubber. The filaments are preferably mutually parallel. A tow, sheet or roving may be passed through a bath of epoxy resin, calendered, heated to partially cure the resin and sheathed by passing through a bath of ethylene/propylene rubber. Consolidation is achieved by heat and/or pressure, using a mould or a die. The weight ratio of filament: resin is between 80 : 20 and 20 : 80, preferably between 60 : 40 and 40 : 60.
