Abstract

1346627 Acrylonitrile copolymer composition ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 16 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970 14 Sept 1971] 58451/71 Heading C3P A composition for spinning into polymer fibres is prepared from (a) a copolymer of at least 60% by wt. of acrylonitrile, 0À5-40% by wt. of a monomer of formula where R 1 is hydrogen or methyl and either each of R 2 and R 3 is C 1 to C 3 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyalkyl, the total number of carbon atoms in R 2 and R 3 being not greater than 4, or R 2 and R 3 together with the nitrogen atom form a pyrollidine or morpholine group; and optionally a third monomer; and (b) 0À1 to 15% by weight of the combined polymers of a polymer comprising at least 65% by wt. of a vinylpyridine, optionally having any number of methyl or ethyl groups substituted in the ring. The composition is dissolved in 55-85% nitric acid to form the spinning liquor; polymer (b) may be prepared in solution in nitric or sulphuric acid and then added to a nitric acid solution of polymer (a). The nitric acid causes hydrolysis of the copolymer (a). Fibres spun from the solution are hygroscopic and can be dyed with acid dyes. In the examples the second monomer of polymer (a) is N,N-dimethylacrylamide, N-methyl- N - hydroxyethylacrylamide, N - methacryloylmorpholine, N,N-diethylmethacrylamide or, in comparative examples, acrylamide or N-methylacrylamide. Polymer (b) is a homopolymer of 4- vinylpyridine or 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine or a copolymer of the latter with methyl acrylate. In one example polymer (a) also contains methyl acrylate, as a third monomer.
