1346429 Applying protective partition strips between groups of containers CLEVELAND PARTITION CORP 17 May 1971 [10 June 1970] 15362/71 Heading B5D [Also in Division B8] In a method of applying protective partition strips to preselected n umbers of moving containers 14, made of glass, or the like, preparatory to packaging as separate units, interconnected ribbons 22 of die-cut disconnectible, longitudinal partition strips of paperboard material, or the like, are re-rolled on a drum 16 and are then fed, from the drum, in substantially laterally aligned relation, into vertical protective positions longitudinally between moving lines of containers 14, transverse partitions 34 being disposed successively between the advancing ranks of containers and into assembly engaging-positions with the ribbons 22 to provide separable, packageable, units. The roll is perforated at 23 to provide connected, end-to-end, partition strips 24 adapted to separate and protect six parallel rows of containers in a packet; has, preferably transversely offset, uncut, tearable tab portions 25 which maintain the ribbons 22 in aligned rotation during re-rolling after die-cutting; and is die-cut to receive the transverse partitions 34. As the roll is unwound it forms a loop the weight of which causes knife edges 31, at the upstream ends of five corridor panels 26, to cut the tabs 25 and separate the ribbons 22. The latter are turned through 90 degrees in the corridors for edge-wise travel down a ramp 30 into separating positions between parallel containers 14 which are fed, in coinciding parallel rows, from below the ramp 30, which may be provided with guide posts, straps, &c. The roll may be unwound by conventional power mechanism to maintain the loops. A power-actuated blade 36 successively drives transverse strips 34 into engagement with the aligned transverse cuts in the partition strips 24 between ranks of the containers 14 in timed relation with the containers, strip 34 being inserted at the transverse cuts aligned with the perforations 23. As a batch of twenty-four containers reaches a stop board 44, a poweractuated ram 46 moves them transversely into an open ended carton 40 brought into position on a conveyer belt 42. The action of the ram 46 may tear the perforations 23, some paperboards however may need to be separated by a blade 48. The actions of the blades 36, 48 serve to effect the longitudinal travel of the strips 34. In a modification, Fig. 5, not shown, the transverse strips 34 are inserted across the strips 24 by means of a vacuum system.
