During operation, the cutting is carried out by rotating cutter 11, slides 20, 22 on device 21 being used purely for setting purposes. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the tool carriage is moved along the tooth to be cut during the cutting operation, as well as having the tool rotate. In a further operation, Fig. 3 (not shown), the tool carriage (24) rotates during cutting so as to move the tool through a circular arc.
