Abstract
1345572 Alloys LATROBE STEEL CO 19 April 1971 [16 Feb 1970 18 Feb 1970] 21896/71 Headings C7A, C7D and C7X In a process for producing a super-alloy from a pre-alloyed powder, the powder is prepared from an initial alloy by heating it to a temperature of 200‹ - 300‹ F above fusion temperature in a magnesia crucible under an argon blanket and atomizing by a jet of high pressure (350 psi) argon. The atomized alloy is rapidly quenched by the argon and by a large water reservoir, then washed with acetone, dried and screened. A portion is packed into a molybdenum-lined can on a vibrating table and cold pressed at 15-30 t.s.i., the cans being hammer forged from 2" down to 0.5" at 1850‹ - 2200‹ F; alternatively the powder can be hot worked by extrusion or hot isostatic pressing. The resulting plate is hot rolled, then air cooled and annealed, and the canning material stripped away. The initial alloy contains by weight 0.01-0.4%C, 5-34%Co, 6-23%G, 0-9% Al, 0-6.5%Ti, 0-11%Mo, 0-2:2%V, 0-14%W and at least one of the minimum amounts 0.1%V, 6.5%W, 7%Mo, balance Ni and minor alloying ingredients and incidental impurities.
