Abstract
1345567 Injection moulding polyamides BAYER AG 19 April 1971 [13 April 1970] 26575/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] The anionic polymerization of caprolactam, with or without comonomers, containing a basic catalyst, activator and viscosity regulator, is initiated in the barrel of an injection moulding machine below the melting temperature of the final polymer, the polymerizing melt is injected into a mould heated at 80 to 180‹ C., polymerization is completed in the mould under the injection pressure and the resulting moulding recovered from the mould and optionally heated at 80 to 180‹ C. for ¢ to 6 hours. Hydraulic or, preferably, screw injection moulding machines may be used and suitable injection units according to whether the lactam is to be introduced as a melt or melted in the barrel are described. In an example the moulding material is delivered by a gear pump from a heated hopper to an injection cylinder which is heated separately in three sections of equal length. When the screw reaches its rearmost position both it and the gear pump are automatically stopped. The injection cylinder may be heated to the same temperature over its whole length, an oil heated cylinder being preferably used.
