Abstract

1345371 Chlorinated polyethylene graft polymers; compositions SHOWA DENKO KK 7 April 1971 9022/71 Headings C3G and C3P A graft polymer is made by graft polymerizing (A) a polymer which is a chlorinated polyethylene having a degree of chorination of 10 to 50% by weight or a mixture comprising a major amount by weight of the chlorinated polyethylene and a minor amount by weight of (x) an ethylenepropylene copolymer rubber containing 35 to 80% by weight of ethylene units and having a specific gravity of 0À83 to 0À85, (y) an ethylenepropylene-nonconjugated diene terpolymer rubber containing 35 to 80% by weight of ethylene units and having a specific gravity of 0À83 to 0À85 or, (z) an ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer rubber containing 5 to 60% by weight of vinyl acetate units, with (B) a monomer mixture comprising: (b 1 ) at least one of styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, tertiary butyl styrene and chlorostyrene, and (b 2 ) at least one of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate, the polymerization being carried out in an aqueous medium wherein (A) and (B) have been suspended separately in the form of fine particles, and the weight ratio of (A) to (B) being 10 : 90 to 90 : 10. Components (A) and (B) may be suspended at the same time or one after the other in the aqueous medium, or they may be suspended in separate aqueous media which are then mixed together. The polymerization may be carried out with the aid of heat or a polymerization initiatior. Compositions may be formed by blending the above graft polymer with (i) a polymer separately prepared from (B) above to form a composition having an overall weight ratio of (A) : (B) as above; (ii) a graft polymer of the rubbers as defined in (A) above with a monomer mixture as defined in (B) above; or (iii) 10-70% by wt. of a vinyl chloride resin. Examples I-VIII and XIII describe the preparation of chlorinated polyethylene polymers with optionally an ethylene-propylenenon-conjugated diene terpolymer grafted with acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate and/or methacrylonitrile together with styrene, α-methyl styrene and/or chlorostyrene. In Examples III-XIII the chlorinated polyethylene graft copolymers were compounded with (i) copolymers of acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate and styrene, α-methylstyrene, chlorostyrene and/or tertbutylstyrene; (ii) polyvinyl chloride and/or (iii) graft polymers of ethylene-propylenenon-conjugated diene terpolymer or ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer and styrene and acrylonitrile.
