Abstract

1344625 Workpiece clamp A E SYKES 22 Sept 1971 [23 June 1970] 30456/70 Heading B3B [Also in Division E2] An integral resilient clamping tube has a bore for fitting on a shaft or spindle to be clamped; a slit 26 extends along the tube 11 from one end, a sleeve 14 of a rubber or rubber like substance surrounds the tube and reduces the width of the slit so as to grip the shaft or spindle when liquid pressure is applied to the sleeve and an extrusion resistant strip 27 extends across the slit under the sleeve so as to prevent the material of the sleeve from being forced into the slit by the applied liquid pressure. The sleeve has two circumferential seals 22, 23 which contact an outer housing 10. The tube is secured against movement by a pin 18 passing through openings in the housing and tube. The tube has a reduced middle portion in which the strip 27 fits; out-turned portions of the strip engage shoulders on the tube. The sleeve 14 is moulded on the middle portion and may be bonded thereto. Oil under pressure is forced through a passage 28 in the housing and compresses the tube 11 to clamp the shaft or spindle 25. The tube may have a plurality of slits and covering strips spaced apart around the tube, and may extend over the full length or part of the length of the tube.
