Abstract
1344498 Chimney controls M E CARTER 30 Dec 1971 [9 Jan 1971] 1138/71 Heading F4J A device for controlling the effective size of a chimney mouth comprises a cover 12 mounted on a shaft 13 above the chimney 11, the cover being movable from an open position, as illustrated, to a closed position when it occludes the chimney mouth, by means of a cable 18 attached to the lower end of the shaft 13. The cover is biased into an open position by spring 17 and may be closed, or partially closed by pulling on cable 18. A device for locking the cable, and thereby the cover, in any particular position may be provided at the base of the chimney. In an alternative embodiment the cover is moved by rotation of a cable. In a further embodiment the shaft 13 is supported by two axially spaced sets of springs, each set comprising, for example, three springs extending from the shaft to the wall of the chimney. The springs are arranged such that when the chimney is open they lie horizontally and when the cable 18 is pulled they extend, simultaneously locating the cover and biasing it to the open position.
