Abstract
1344345 Measuring roadway deflection electrically CENTRE EXPERIMENTAL DE RECHERCHES ET D'ETUDES DU BATIMENT ET DES T P 19 April 1971 [17 April 1971] 27215/71 Heading G1N A method of measuring the deflection characteristics of a roadway upon displacement of a load therealong comprises the steps of disposing at a measurement point of the roadway a sensing device adapted in response to a local deflection of the roadway around said point to provide a signal representative at any time of the instantaneous speed or acceleration in the direction perpendicular to the roadway at that point, moving a predetermined load at a constant speed along the roadway at the vicinity of the said measurement point, and integrating the signals provided by the sensing device as a result of the load deflection caused at the measurement point by the passage of the load for determining the deflection characteristics of the roadway. A device for measuring the deflection characteristics upon displacement of a load therealong comprises a loaded wheeled vehicle adapted to be moved at constant speed, at least one sensing device 10 or 10', operative when lying at a measurement point on the roadway, to provide an electrical signal representative of the instantaneous speed or acceleration in a direction perpendicular to the roadway at that point, an endless belt 2 carrying said at least one sensing device, the belt arranged to have a portion, in operation, resting on the roadway along a path extending parallel to the vehicle displacement, at the vicinity of a loaded vehicle wheel, electric motors 5, 6 driving pulleys or rollers 3, 4 for moving the belt at a speed equal to the vehicle speed so that a belt portion resting on the roadway is not moved with respect thereto upon vehicle displacement, and a data processing unit 13 for determining the deflection characteristics of the roadway in response to the signals provided upon vehicle displacement by said at least one sensing device when lying on the roadway.
