Abstract

1343628 Drawing polyester filaments ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 23 Dec 1971 [29 Jan 1971] 59924/71 Heading B5B Drawn filaments are prepared from a polyester of which at least 90% of the ester units are terephthalate units obtainable from terephthalic acid and a dihydric alcohol. The polyester has a number average molecular weight of at least 15,000. The filaments are drawn in one or more drawing steps and the drawn filaments shrunk at a temperature of 150-250‹ C. whilst being kept under tension so that they contract by from 10 to 25% of their drawn length. The filaments so prepared have a tensile strength of at least 6À8 gm. per denier, an ultimate elongation of at least 18%, a tenacity index greater than 30 grams/denier, a degree of crystallinity greater than 50%, a birefringence of from 0À158 to 0À170. a crystalline orientation function (fc) of from 0À887 to 0À902 and an amorphous orientation function (fa) of from 0.430 to 0À500 and a difference between fc and fa of at least 0À380. Examples illustrate the drawing of melt-spun polyethylene terephthalate filaments.
