Abstract

1343249 Toy helicopters MATTEL Inc 27 June 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 29950/72 Heading A6S A toy helicopter 10 is mounted at the end of a boom 18 which can rotate about, and pivot up-and-down, relatively to a pylon 12, the boom being twisted about its own axis so as to make the motor powered rotor 16 of the helicopter draw the machine either forward or backwards, as desired. The boom 18 consists of upper and lower struts 34, 36 relatively axially movable with respect to each other, and pivoted to a bracket 28 journalled on the pylon 12 and to the helicopter 10. The struts 34, 36 of the boom 18 act in the manner of a parallelogram linkage to keep the helicopter 10 upright irrespective of its height. An electric motor 26 in the pylon housing drives through a flexible shaft 50 passed through the lower boom strut 36 to the helicopter rotor 16. Turning a bellcrank lever 68 about its fulcrum 70 on the pylon housing raises and lowers a bush 72 connected by a link (74), Fig. 3 (not shown), to an arm (76) extending at right angles from the inner end of the boom upper strut 34, which is accordingly twisted about its axis. As the upper boom strut 34 twists, it tilts the helicopter downwards or upwards, so that its rotor 16 pulls the helicopter 10 forwards or backwards. The strut 34 is biassed by a spring (84), Fig. 3 (not shown), engaged with the end of the arm (76) on the strut to turn to the median position with the helicopter upright. The helicopter 10 is raised from the ground both by the pull of its rotor 16 and also by the biass of a spring 59 connected between the pylon 12 and the boom 18. Control is effected by actuation of a remotelypositioned joystick 20. Fore-and-aft movement of the joystick 20 acts through a first rod 91 upon a rheostat 92 in the circuit of a battery 94 powering the motor 26 driving the helicopter rotor 16. Sideways pivoting of the joystick 20 turns a bracket 98 about its axis 100 so that a sideways projecting arm (110), Fig. 4 (not shown), turns a bellcrank lever 114, 116 within the joystick housing, thus sliding a second rod 88 connected to the bellcrank lever 68 in the pylon, to tilt the helicopter 10.
