Abstract

1343071 Pulse radar SIEMENS AG 27 April 1971 [28 April 1970] 11516/71 Heading H4D A stereoscopic display for an electromagnetic wave pulse echo system includes a transmitter antenna performing line scans of the terrain, the two picture screens being provided with horizontal and vertical deflections corresponding the echo azimuth and elevation as measured at the antenna site wherein extra horizontal deflections are added to one screen and subtracted from the the other which are proportional to the ratio of the effective stereoscopic base length to the target range measured from the antenna site. At every transmitter pulse S1 is closed momentarily, charging capacitors Cl to one half of Ub representing the base length b. When S1 is opened each C1 discharges through R1 and on reception of an echo S2, S3 are closed transferring the instantaneous voltage on to capacitors C2 its value being approximately b/r, where r is the actual range. This voltage is supplied to the horizontal plates of the two CRT displays B1, B2 with the normal azimuth deflection voltage Up to deflect the indication by equal amounts in opposite directions. The two pictures then appear as if they were produced by receivers displaced laterally by an amount b (Fig. 1, not shown). B1 is viewed by the left eye and B2 by the right thus producing a stereoscopic effect. The display may be used in an aircraft where the displays are fed by optical fibres to the pilot's helmet, or the screens may be viewed by polarized or coloured spectacles. The transmitter may be a linear phased array scanned by frequency modulating the transmitter or if lasers are used the beam is scanned by mirrors or prisms. Artificial echoes having adjustable delays may be incorporated to provide range markers and there may be provided means for altering the range sensitivity, i.e. near and far fields.
