134,242. Sopwith Aviation Co., and Davies, C. H. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). May 31, 1918. Load, engaging. - A self-gripping device, applicable as a gripping device for cranes &c., but shown in the drawing as applied to a bracket, is constructed with two gripping members connected at their upper and lower ends respectively by parallel links and normally pressed towards one another by a spring or springs acting on the links. As shown in Fig. 1, the gripping- members a, d, which may be cut away in places to reduce weight, and may have serrated gripping faces, are connected by links c and held in gripping contact with a structure b<3> by a spring f. The member a is formed with a bracket c to support a level indicator. In another arrangement, the spring f is replaced by springs surrounding the pivot rods of, and acting on, the links, and inturned tongues on the link constitute stops by contacting the gripping member before the springs can be strained excessively.
